Fortingall Yew Tree and Church

The Fortingall Yew, said to be the oldest tree in Europe, is now believed to be around 5,000 years old. Aerial photographs reveal an enclosure centered around this Yew tree which indicates that a previously unknown early celtic monastic site, of a similar size to the one known to have existed on Iona, could have been established here. A high concentration of local gaelic placenames connect many of the early celtic saints, such as Aidan, Cuthbert, Adamnan and Ninian to this region. Close by is a possibly unique triangular formation of megalithic stone circles. Legends abound here, including one that has come down through the ancient oral tradition, that Pontius Pilate was born at Fortingall. There are also stories linking Fingal, the ancient Caledonian warrior king, with this same area.
