Your Sacred Self: Making the Decision to be Free
by Dr. Wayne W. Dyer
Introduction
Dear Reader, these thoughts, ideas and quotes are about living the spiritual life today based on my perceptions of spiritual realism. I am a spiritual being having a human experience. As a human being I have human shortcomings which are part of this incarnational experience. I am not perfect in this human state of consciousness but as soul and a fragment of God/Source I have pure potential. I mention this for those readers who believe they cannot live life in a spiritual and ethical way because of their perceived human failings, past errors or feelings of unworthiness. It is my sincerest wish to convey that I know it is possible to live a spiritual and ethical life today if we have a sincere desire to do so and seek inner guidance. God sees our intent. My goal is to Self Realisation, to know myself as Soul, a spark of God/Source. Meanwhile, my intent is to move from "belief" into "knowing" wherever possible. Information is understandably a 'belief system' until it is experienced as a knowingness within. My purpose is to search for truth, and to simply share. These ideas are not 'set in stone' as it were. They are written in the spirit of sharing. It is my understanding that as I evolve I will come into a deeper understanding of some of these concepts. Where you believe my understanding is incorrect or incomplete, you may detect it and help me in my pursuit of truth. Jesus is purported to have said: "Seek, and do not cease, and ye shall find."
Creativity - touching the hem of the garment of God
Creativity is of God, but there are different layers, in my view. It is the feeling aspect which although it has emotion - goes deeper, until it sparks something inside us. Then the Divine writes, speaks, paints etc. through us. This creativity inspires others to know the Divine Source. This is truly something to aim for. It can transform the individual and also bring more energy and good health, a joy of being and a love of Life.Creating our own reality:
It is true that we create our own reality, but I believe it is not as simplistic as has sometimes been conveyed. When we come across deep spiritual concepts such as this we need to reflect upon them so that we can gain a deeper understanding, rather than a possibly simplistic black and white one. I agree that we need to practice objective self awareness so that we are not in illusion about any aspects of ourselves which may be creating difficult outer circumstances. Meanwhile, I have noticed that some people will attempt to use this concept by attempting to justify their negative behaviour by saying that what we are seeing in them is a reflection of our state of consciousness and nothing to do with them. Whilst in some cases this has validity, I have become aware that we need to be careful that we are not allowing certain behaviour patterns or actions of another towards us because we somehow deserve it as it is a reflection of our inner consciousness. Certainly we can reflect upon our inner state, asking for inner guidance in case there is something we need to be aware of. We may also wish to ask for understanding and another perspective of a situation. It is possible that the situation may be resolved without our needing to take any outer action. I believe it is most important to remember that by asking Spirit for a resolving of a situation or changing our inner perception, we may never need to change our outer circumstances. This, of course, doesn't negate the fact that we may sometimes find it necessary to take outer action. There may be other factors of perception involved, for example, someone may suggest to another that they are 'into control'. From the viewpoint of 'creating one's own reality' it could be that this judgement is an outer perception of their own reality, but alongside that it could also be that their perception and understanding of the other person's words or actions did not go deep enough. There may have been reasons for their words or actions which they were not aware of, i.e. they didn't see the bigger picture. There could also be communication problems.
It can be helpful to seek inner guidance on the essence of a particular situation and deal with that, whenever possible, rather than spending time working around the periphery. One may ask: How can I speak/write/act so as to help facilitate a harmonious resolution for all concerned, as far as is possible?
Making conscious choices about what we accept into our consciousness:
The lens of our individual consciousness filters that which we perceive. The words of spiritual teachers that are truly and vibrationally connected to God/Source can have layers of meaning. This is why we can read information of this vibrational calibre many times and it does not grow old. As our conscious awareness expands so the filter lens of our consciousness becomes clearer and we see something 'new' in a particular writing, or in nature. It was there before, but this time we see, or hear it, with greater perception.I have found that it is important to make conscious choices around what I accept into my consciousness. For example, if someone suddenly informs me, unsolicited, that I was 'a particular person in a past life', or that 'I was together with this or that person in a past life and there is karma to be worked out', I can make a conscious choice as to whether or not to accept that into my consciousness. If I do not wish to accept such a comment or point of view into my consciousness, and it doesn't feel appropriate to state this outwardly to the person, I can inwardly state that 'I do not accept this into my consciousness'- or words to that effect.
There are those who will predict a personal future situation, or inform us that they see something in our aura. This may feel confirming or it may feel invasive, though I realise that it is probably shared in a kindly or possibly habitual way by someone who has become accustomed to doing this. The important thing is to be sufficiently aware so that we can make a conscious choice as to what we accept into our consciousness.
Discernment is also necessary if the information comes from a source we have requested guidance from. We could be living in illusion believing we were a particular person in a past life, or went through a certain experience. Even if advice or guidance has been asked for from another individual whom we trust, we obviously still need to reflect upon whether it feels right and accurate.
Regression therapy (hypnotherapy into past lives) can be helpful, and I have heard that some people have recovered from physical ailments by becoming aware of the cause from a past life. However, I feel that the therapist needs to have good ethics and be careful that they do not make suggestions to the client's subconscious that could lead the person along a certain track to believe something that may not be accurate. I know of people who have informed me that through regression therapy they now believe they were a particular famous person, which may or may not be accurate. How many Mary Magdalene's are there, for example? Of course, they could be connecting with the energy of her archetype. If a person truly was someone who had an important part to play in a past life (and it takes a great deal of discernment to be certain - even then I believe it's best to keep an open mind around it) the important thing is how does the experience of that life connect with the present one? It may be more helpful to these souls to learn that they are loved by their Creator just as much if they were Joe Bloggs or Cleopatra! Their power comes from their awareness of their Divinity, not from being a well-known person.
Our universe is founded upon Love
So much has been written about love throughout time. Many times the word love has been used when the meaning and intent has not been truly loving. Love is deep and constantly expands, fear contracts. To expand in consciousness we love from the depths of our beings. We feel it as a profound and wonderful energy that expands us into a greater awareness."It is love that imparts vitality to our minds and hearts and enables it to germinate. The law of love will bring to you all necessity for your spiritual growth and maturity. Therefore, if you desire love, try to realise that the only way to get love is by giving love .The love that makes all things beautiful. Yes, and breathes divinity into the very dust you tread. With love shall life roll on gloriously throughout eternity, like the voice of great music that has power to hold the hearer's heart poised on eagle's wings far above that earthly world." (Stranger by the River by Paul Twitchell).
Respect is a deep part of love, when that leaves so also can love.
Spiritually inspired speakers who truly have a message for humanity prefer us to focus on their message, rather than on their human persona, illuminating the light rather than the lamp. Out of respect and love we remember that they are also human beings, subject to the same human failings as are we. We need to love and support them in their work rather than place them on a pedestal. Sometimes when we see love and spiritual power within another we feel we need to be with that person as we believe they have something that we do not. It is important to understand that the reason we are aware of the deep and expansive love they are radiating is because we have that same depth of love within us. It is simply not available to our conscious awareness at this time - but we feel something because we are all One in essence. Understanding this can be helpful to anyone who may feel a sense of unworthiness or disempowerment when they are with someone whom they believe has a quality of being which they do not.
Some people say that we should love unconditionally because God's love is unconditional, like the sun that shines on all life. There are, however, various scenarios involved around this. If another person has caused harm in some way we can attempt to feel a sense of goodwill, or sense of unconditional love within our hearts when we think of the person as this is good for us, it assists us to remain in a higher state of consciousness or vibrational frequency. Obviously, this is also good for all Life as everything is connected. However, loving unconditionally does not mean that we therefore "allow" others to walk over us. We can do whatever we feel is appropriate to say or do. If we find that we cannot keep a feeling of goodwill within our hearts then we can attempt to be as detached about the situation as possible. However, if we feel angry then it is important to realise it and not to deny the feeling or feel guilty about it. Honesty with oneself is important.
We can ask inwardly for guidance to find a safe way to let go of the anger so that it doesn't become lodged in the consciousness. I have found that I will often be given a different perception that may help me to understand why a person acted in a certain way. This may ease the stress and anger until time helps with the healing and we feel more detached about the situation. If it feels appropriate we can then attempt to feel a sense of goodwill and unconditional love when we think of the person. However, if the other person tends to be invasive within the day or dreamtime state, we need to be careful about giving them any encouragement to continue by thinking of them. My experience has shown me that it may be better to keep a detached feeling about them. Writing a letter to God/Source or whatever one looks to as a higher power, to ask for assistance and protection, then placing it under one's pillow at night, can be a very effective form of protection from dream state interference.
The dynamic and infinite Peace of God
'Words are not peace. Thoughts are not peace. Plans are not peace. Programs are not peace. Peace is fundamental. It is easy to prove in the sciences, and the real spiritual masters who are here are teaching it. It is fundamental to all faiths, all religions, all spirituality. It is from this that everything was, or let us say: In the beginning was Peace and the Peace was with God and the Peace was God, and out of this Peace has everything been made that was made:'The difference between this Logos-Peace and what we generally call 'peace' is that the latter is a vacuum, a zero, a nothing, a blank, a negative to the extreme. The Logos-Peace is fullness, all-inclusive, and expresses the human family. .". (Samuel L. Lewis, a Sufi teacher).
Many well intentioned and wonderful people speak of peace and love but without God awareness and knowing who and what we really are, we don't go deep enough. There is also wisdom, knowing, unity, power, creativity and sacredness. To start from seeking and knowing God we cannot help but express love, wisdom, power, creativity, unity and peace. We fall by the wayside at times because we are not perfect in our present state of human consciousness. Jesus is purported to have said "Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and all else will be added unto you", and "The Kingdom of God is within you".
People often lead busy, stressful and sometimes boring lives and there is a wish for some change or excitement. At times so much so that wars or cataclysmic events appear to be a welcome change to their humdrum existence. Then after they realise the horrors of war they wish again for peace. This may be subconscious but it is in many ways due to a lack of awareness of a connection to God Source. We have been taught to believe that peace is somehow boring, that we need excitement of the kind that we find in the James Bond movies, for example. Peace will definitely not be boring when we truly know ourselves!
We need knowledge and truth as well as inner peace, but the word peace can denote a passiveness, whereas this Peace of God is a great and deep Peace, it is a dynamic and infinite Peace.
"The idea of the ascetic life, which is the idea of the monastic life .is to bring a person to a state of complete peace In times of constant change, people get upset and worried and all that sort of thing, and what one has to get out of the ascetic life is a deeper outlook on things, so that we are in a state where we are not buffeted around by changes that are taking place on a more surface level. Let these changes take place, and we take our part in them, but our real life is actually going on a much deeper level than that, in which there can be a profound peace which is terribly important. And this kind of stability - this inner stability ties into our relations with other people .and it's a very deep thing " (Merton and Sufism: The Untold Story, edited by Rob Baker and Gray Henry).
Humility
The Collins English mini dictionary describes the state of being humble as: "1. Conscious of one's failings. 2. Modest, unpretentious. 3. Unimportant. 4. Cause to feel humble, humiliate." The first two refer to a sense of being aware of one's human failings and a sense of modesty. The other two have a sense of belittling oneself, i.e. feeling that one has little value.True humility isn't about belittling oneself but having an awareness of our human failings and abilities without feeling superior or inferior. It is like standing on the edge of eternity and gazing out at the vastness of creation. We feel a sense of vastness which is also humbling.
Worship
Worship has the tendency to create the illusion of separateness, and the belief that something is outside of us. I prefer the term reverence. A sense of wonder and appreciation of the magnificence and beauty of our Creator brings about a sense of joy and gratitude within the heart. True spiritual teachers want us to practice their teachings rather than worship their personality. I am not saying that one should not worship if that is what feels right, but to perhaps take a look at whether we are placing our power outside ourselves while doing so.The Law of One
Does it make a difference to the rest of the world if only one soul grows spiritually in wisdom and truth? Yes it does, because of our unity with all Life. Each soul who grows spiritually is healing some of the imbalance in the collective consciousness of humanity. We can make a difference by committing our will to the knowledge and wisdom of the Truth of God/Source. We will then carry the Light of Truth and wisdom of God/Source within us, and others will be attracted by it because it is the joy of the Spirit itself, and we can become a vehicle for offering it to others. The abundance and non-limitation of Creation
"Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and all else shall be added unto you." - Jesus.Abundance is of God, but we cannot become attached to the things of this world. Everything, including our physical bodies, is on loan to us. All that we take with us is our Soul fragment of God/Source and our soul's experience. Becoming unattached doesn't mean that we have no care, love or compassion. We do what we can and then leave the outcome to God so far as we are able to do so. In fact we love more deeply when fear and attachment is lessened. We require detachment from the illusory emotions of the false self that can weigh us down vibrationally.
It is all right to have physical things. It's the attachment to them that can cause problems.
Some people seem to believe that having money, or other forms of abundance, gives them security or a feeling of self esteem. There are people I have known who feel the need to give copious physical items as gifts. They need to know and understand that their presence is enough. They also do not need to show that they are worthy by their intellectual prowess or any other capability. As a God manifested Being that is enough! We have been conditioned to believe that unless we have certain material things or measure up to a certain image, we are not successful or worthy. It is fine to wish to improve one's circumstances, but not from the basis of a false image that has been perpetrated on us - or from a need to do so; but rather from out of service to one's true self - God/Source within. This needs to be done without attachment to the outcome. It is good to have a goal but nevertheless be flexible in our approach to it.Competition
In reality, i.e. God's kingdom, there are only winners, as we all contain a fragment of the Divine Perfection of God Creator. We are not in competition with any other fragment, for we each have unique qualities.May the Blessings Be
